OLDSMAR, Fla. — Dec. 2, 2019 — Industry-leading innovator PlateSmart Technologies took home a Platinum Award for Best License Plate Recognition System at American Security Today’s 2019 ASTORS Homeland Security Awards with its new Powered by PlateSmart™ product offering. The awards were presented at the ISC East tradeshow in New York City.
The award also earned PlateSmart the recognition of being the first LPR provider to be a four-time ASTORS Award winner, having been recognized in 2016, 2017, and 2018 with gold and platinum ASTORS awards for best-of-breed LPR solutions.
“Cutting-edge innovation is how we came to be recognized with ASTORS Awards previously,” said John Chigos, CEO, PlateSmart Technologies. “And given how innovative Powered by PlateSmart is, we’re delighted to have taken home a fourth consecutive ASTORS Award. Powered by PlateSmart is quite simply a game-changer. It’s the easiest, most advanced, and most cost-effective way for users to adopt our advanced LPR technology.
“On behalf of the entire PlateSmart team, I thank the ASTORS Award committee for this honor.”
“Powered by PlateSmart isn’t about LPR anymore — it’s about vehicle recognition solutions. Our deep learning technology provides comprehensive vehicle data to solution providers. That means more actionable intelligence for users.”
Built upon AI and deep machine learning, Powered by PlateSmart lets solution providers extend the capabilities of their products to include reading license plates, their state jurisdiction, vehicle make, and color. Orientation (front, rear, or side) and type will soon be available.
Powered by PlateSmart reads and delivers the vehicle data — including the plate image if the customer desires — to the business solution via the plugin. This allows the business solution to manage the data within its own environment for a seamless user experience.
“Powered by PlateSmart isn’t about LPR anymore — it’s about vehicle recognition solutions,” Chigos said. “Our deep learning technology provides comprehensive vehicle data to solution providers. That means more actionable intelligence for users.”
Chigos said that PlateSmart began referring to its LPR technology as a vehicle recognition solution about two years ago. The company envisioned the need for LPR to evolve into a tool that could capture more vehicle data. PlateSmart’s approach provides users with functionalities and previously unattainable analytics adaptable to the user’s needs, from law enforcement applications to those of a commercial user.
Powered by PlateSmart is ideal for video management system (VMS) providers, video surveillance solutions, parking and vehicle management, customer experience enhancement, school bus safety, and tolling operations. PlateSmart has seen great interest in Powered by PlateSmart and recently announced the adoption of the solution by Averics Systems for its AvericsUnity™ security management system.
PlateSmart was the first license plate recognition (LPR) company to bring a software-only, camera-agnostic object recognition LPR solution to market.
“Our approach of using a software-only solution changed the industry’s perception of what LPR could be,” Chigos said. “It was no longer a proprietary hardware solution. We also changed the notion that LPR had to be expensive. And we were able to add more features, analytics, and better capture and accuracy rates than competitive solutions. This forced the industry to follow suit and lower costs while improving the interoperability of their solutions.
“So not only did PlateSmart succeed in providing the first software-only LPR product. We helped LPR in the U.S. go mainstream. And that’s what we’re really proud of.”

PlateSmart Technologies developed the original software-only license plate recognition (LPR) solution, PlateSmart ARES®, which is compatible with virtually all video management systems (VMS) and IP cameras. Designed to function as a stand-alone tool or integrate with third-party software and hardware, PlateSmart ARES provides near-real-time actionable vehicle intelligence for complete situational awareness. The software offers true object recognition instead of simple optical character recognition (OCR), which allows it to read the plate as well as the state jurisdiction and vehicle make. PlateSmart has earned multiple industry awards for excellence in security technology.
